Guide to Reviewing Games

Posted by on Dec 14 2009 | Product Descriptions

Reviewing games for Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable seems pretty appealing but I must tell you that one needs to be a hardcore gamer in order to write interesting reviews. You can easily find thousands of game reviews all across the internet but the main motive should be to write your review in a very unique manner so that it stands out. The first and foremost thing is to write the reviews in a very simple language so that it could be easily understood by teenagers and youngsters. Following are some of the most important tips that would definitely help you while reviewing a game.

  1. Starting from a brief overview of the history of the game is very helpful in building the flow. Most of the games are a sequel of the previous game and you can mention this while starting the review. If it is not a sequel then you can talk about the genre of games it belongs to.
  2. You should always write about the initial reaction towards a specific game. It may or may not be completely different from what you think about it after playing it for several hours. The initial reaction matters a lot because there are many gamers that would simply lose or build interest in a specific game on the first look.
  3. Another very important thing that is very important to define while reviewing a game is the controls. Some games have pretty easy controls while in other you may need sometime to get used to. Explaining or writing about the interface is very important and helpful.
  4. The most important thing that a gamer would look out in a game review is the graphics of a certain game. You can define if the graphics are 2 D or 3 D. Defining the sound and how well it complimented the video is another thing that you can incorporate. Most games include voice acting and you can talk about it as well. The sample clips were up to the mark or not can be another thing to talk about.
  5. You can even talk about the level of difficulty that this game offers. Telling this would help the gamers to have any sought of false conception.

While reviewing games you should try incorporating some technical words that are specifically associated with games. For learning such words you can read game reviews on the internet.

Website Copywriting; Getting Everything Right

Posted by on Dec 12 2009 | Web Content Writing

Getting everything right with website copywriting is among the hardest of the jobs, a discussion we had started off with. But the point that a good website is one that hits the bull’s eye is paramount and ensuring that is what the job of copywriter is. The question though is, is it complex and confusing? Yes. And even more important, is it doable? Absolutely. But the problem is, how you do it?
The process of getting everything right with a website copy is a combination of some general steps that you can follow and a peculiar skill for website copywriting that you can acquire if you try hard and try smartly. Let’s begin with the way to approaching a project from scratch;

  1. The first step is getting to know from the client the maximum possible information about business he is into, if the website is going to be about the business, as is mostly the case. Once you know what the client’s business is all about your job becomes easier when it comes to expressing through words.
  2. The next step involves understanding the purpose of the website. It could be a mere virtual face for the client, it could be about introducing oneself to a newer market, it could be about getting more business or it could be something particular the client has in mind. Once you know the purpose, you know how to approach the website copy, what to include and write, and how to align the content to the purpose client has in mind.
  3. What is also important is to know the target market and audience the client has in mind. In fact the tone and approach of the entire website copy is oriented towards what would appeal to the target group. If you can’t get their attention and get them interested in getting in touch with your client then that beats the purpose of the website.

Once you have got the basics of the project right you can be very much sure of getting the website copy right too. But there is one thing that is still very crucial in coming up with a perfect website copy and that is the most difficult part. Some copywriters have the knack for website copywriting and for them the job is obviously easier, others can acquire the skill. The smart way about it is to scan and study those websites over the internet which are the right examples of what a good website copy is. Also, going through the websites about the same business as the client operates in will help you get the hang of the usual approach followed, what is workable for that vertical and also what you can add to make your website different, more effective and help it stand out.

Website copywriting like any copywriting job has its own challenges and hence requires a special approach. Once you get down to working on a few projects it starts coming naturally to you and you can be sure of getting everything right.

Valuable SEO writing on Social Media

Posted by on Dec 11 2009 | SEO Copywriting

My tryst with SEO writing on the intricacies of social media is like bringing two strangers together and make them communicate even if they don’t want to. It seems weird but that’s true because writing articles for search engine optimization is completely different from writing a product description article or writing any other regular stuff. ‘Knowing the unknown’ is the key in SEO writing and an expert SEO writer should be flexible enough to gain knowledge on certain things which helps in enhancing the quality of SEO article. Flexibility and proper comprehension of the topic is quintessential to the success of SEO writing because these articles are usually created for various uses and not just for pleasure reading.

Having that inner instinct for writing and the willingness to know about a variety of things is crucial to the success of any SEO writing. An SEO writer should be well conversed with the impeccable and measured word usage which has all the power to hit it right because using right keywords at right place is what is expected out of a well laid SEO article. Following key points will help you to adorn your flair for writing an article for search engine optimization.

Understanding the Keywords

Before writing the content for SEO article, it is important to incorporate all the mentioned keywords into the article. But, when I started writing SEO article for myriad topics on social media, the real challenge struck when the topics and the keywords actually clashed with each other and even then you had to incorporate them. At times, the SEO writer is required to search the exact meaning of the keyword related to social media like ‘click-through-rates’ , ‘pay per click’ and many such unfamiliar terms.

Immaculate Keyword Placement to Create Sensible Sentences

Since I dealt with social media technicalities, it became a challenging job to come out with meaningful and logical sentences so that the accurate meaning could be derived by its prospective readers. Studying the niche is important in order to write down your thoughts in SEO articles with impeccable keyword usage and to live up to the client’s expectations. My experience says that proper understanding of the topic and the related researched content is essential in order to put your thoughts in the form of meaningful sentences. For SEO writers, it is advisable not to stuff the article with keywords because it could be considered as spam.

Maintaining the Flow

Writing an SEO article on various aspects of social media is not everyone’s cup of tea. Trust me, nothing is as challenging as this because keeping the sentence flowing in a meaningful manner is just not easy. Sometimes, you cannot associate the keyword ‘link building’ with the topic called ‘new interface launched by Twitter’ but the irony is you have to do this because your client wants it that way.

But an SEO writer is expected to do the best while incorporating all the keywords, forming meaningful sentences and maintaining the flow of any niche article category for search engine optimization. End your article in a satisfactory way by proofreading so that even the most unlikely combination of keywords and sentences make sense.

Writing For An Event

Posted by on Dec 09 2009 | Web Content Writing

Event writing has taken a step upward in the field of content writing today. In days to come the style adopted for writing an event writing will be given more importance than the regular writing style. Here are a few tips for writing for an event

Prepare About The Event: Since, before writing about anything, it should be well researched; the same approach also applies for an event. The event given should be well researched and you should know its background well. The details about the event like when it started and what is the purpose of the event, when the event will take place and what is its importance are questions that you have to ask. Who all will participate in the event and what is the outcome of the event? Suppose, it’s a sport event that you are writing about, you should know where it is taking place and who are participating in it and by whom it is organized?

Record the Happenings of the Event: The entire event spreads across a day, so it’s important to recall the happening and select only the key points of the event. The write-up should be presented along with a picture. The picture should also show the main point of the event. Like a sports event should contain the picture of the winning team or winning person.

Check Out The Names: Though Shakespeare said “What is there in the name?” but in the event it is all about the name. The names of the celebrity, sportsperson, and spokesperson should be spelt righty. If he has quoted things which are relevant about the event, that should also be mentioned in the write up.

Reaction Of The People: The presence of people makes an event successful and their reactions make an event popular too. If it’s a sports event, people wait for it and they are always excited for their team. Their enthusiasm should be mentioned in the article.

Summarizing Information: Summarize the event happenings and highlight the exciting part of the event. Do mention some quotes spoken by the sports person.

Event writing is very crisp and informative writing and the readers should be given the right information in the right amount and the right way.

Chartering unknown territories

Posted by on Dec 08 2009 | Web Content Writing

I have always been the sort to take on challenges and experiment. However, when I was given the responsibility of handling a project where I would have to write about drugs and pharmaceuticals I had never even heard of, I was completely bowled over. For someone whose interest in science begins and ends at the fact that Newton discovered gravity when an apple fell on his head, writing and researching pharmaceuticals was something I found like trying to decipher an alien language. But I guess this is something that comes with our domain. So herein I shall try to give my readers a few tips on how you can make sense of something completely alien and still come up with a great piece of writing.

The challenge:

Putting together an article on drugs and chemical compounds, which are either under trial or have recently been introduced to the pharmaceutical market or are being developed to be the next breakthrough cure for a chronic disease.

The approach:

  • Research

Given the sensitivity of the subject being written on, research is the key and your only savior. I cannot begin to emphasize how important it is to get your facts right. Right from the chemical composition to the disease it shall cure or prevent to how it will accomplish the same, needs to be thoroughly researched and cross checked with other websites. Get your facts from authentic websites, especially those ending in ‘.gov’ or ‘.org’. Wikipedia is a rich source of information; however, it may not have the complete information and at times any information at all, so be prepared to widen your search options.

  • Unbiased reporting

Always remember, your opinion does not count. Whether a drug will be successful or not, whether it will successfully cure or prevent a disease or not is not up to you to decide. This is determined by clinical trials and clinical trials alone, so keep a neutral approach when writing. Do not try to interpret the facts your way, this is sensitive information and should be reported as is without any add-ons.

  • Short and crisp information

Anyone could end up reading your article: a doctor, a pharmacist, a volunteer for the next phase of clinical trials, or even a patient with the condition. The information has to be to the point and presented keeping in mind that the person reading it could be a professional or a layman. The best way to ensure that the reader gets the point is to not beat about the bush and keep the information as crisp as possible. These articles do not require flowery language and are intended only to be informative, therefore do not even bother to create a poem.

  • Simple language

The article should not read like some sort of an alien code. The whole point is to report it in the most responsible manner and yet keep the simplicity. Anybody who stumbles upon it should easily be able to understand what the correlation is between the constituents in the drug and the effect they would have on the condition. The best bet to make it simple is to first understand the information yourself, which makes me point towards the first point where I talked about research being the key. Unless you do not understand what you are writing about, the confusion will carry over to the article.

All I can say to sum up is do not treat this as just another piece of writing since the person reading it may actually be in desperate need of the drug and may be looking for alternative cures and your article may influence his decision.

Website Copywriting – A Challenging And Captivating Job

Posted by on Dec 07 2009 | Web Content Writing

After having tried my hands or perhaps more appropriately my fingers with different varieties of copywriting projects I must confess that for me writing website copy does take the cake. In fact I have always found writing website copy to be the most challenging and captivating of all. Creating a perfect website copy involves everything that is remotely related to copywriting in general and as a matter of fact goes beyond the traditional approaches and aspects of copywriting. And I am sure once I have shared my experiences may be you would also share my view and agree with me.

Website copywriting is Challenging:

What I have learned from my experiences is that writing a perfect website copy is always a challenge. The client always looks at his website as a virtual face of his business, organization or idea or himself or any other purpose for which the website is being developed. In the world of web you are perceived as what your website showcases and the client always has a zero tolerance approach and quite justifiably too. Not only that, since we are the experts here, so even if the client is say somewhat lax or, as it happens in many cases, doesn’t grab the significance of a perfect website copy, I have had to convince the client that when it comes to websites anything less than perfect is just not good enough.

The factors that actually contribute towards building the challenge in addition to meeting client requirements include making the website market and business relevant, orienting it to meet the expectations of the target audience, outsmarting client’s competitors and whole lots of other aspects too. But I guess we’ll delve into the depths some other day, some other time.

Website copywriting is Captivating:

Nothing thrills me more than taking up a difficult challenge and that is precisely what makes writing website copy the most captivating job for me. When you set out for creating a perfect website copy it becomes a very interesting, intriguing and involved process. It begins at understanding not just client needs but perhaps even more important for me is to understand the business of the client almost as well as the client does. As I move on to putting the multiple thoughts, ideas and expectations into the website copy the whole process keeps becoming more engaging with every page or even every single line.

In the end to get everything right, as I already pointed out is the mission of any website copywriting project, is anything but easy. I would be hiding the truth if I didn’t confess that at times while working on a website project the “Challenging” part does dominate the “Captivating” part leading to cropping up of the “Frustrating” part. But it is also true or perhaps truer that nothing compares to the feeling of viewing the website finally going live and becoming a channel for the client to conquer the virtual world.

It’s short, it’s continuous and its effective…

Posted by on Dec 05 2009 | Ad Copywriting

It’s an auto-responder series, a marketing collateral that has caught up in an age when time is short and the impact on the consumer’s mind has to be quick and powerful. The trick that content writers play often when writing an auto-responder mail series is to ‘literally’ chop the client requirement into logical solutions and then providing a copy for each solution with minimum words but maximum effect.

Auto-responders, as they are auto-generated with customized content offer a very cost effective and time managed solution to developing marketing copy for a product. They work almost always in creating an impact because they are scripted such that they hold the reader’s attention instantly and if the copy is well written the idea stays in the reader’s mind longer. A good auto-responder series will always have the following taken care of:

The sequence of the auto-responders- Before writing the content for the auto responder, it is important that the content writer and the client reach the same page with regard to the number of mails they would need to sequence in a series. Auto-responders could vary from five to seven to more depending on how long the client would want to engage with his target customers before targeting conversion. It is generally not the method and neither is it advisable to have more than 7 or 10 mails in a series.

Brevity of content- How effective a unit of an auto-responder would be will to a large extent depend, not on the length of the mail but what engages the reader’s attention. It could be a length of two brief lines that could very efficiently convey the seller’s thought across to the buyer and hold his interest for a while.

Focus of content- It is always important to draft the series in terms of priority as to what goes first and what goes next and then sit down to writing the mails. Each auto-responder mail is like a rung of a ladder, the progress is only forward or upward as you may. Each Auto-responder is like a quintessential mini soap-opera in itself, always ending on a note that keeps the reader wanting to know what happens next.

Import of timing- Marketers who use the auto-responder technique will tell you that timing is the name of the game when it comes to auto-responder series. The intent is to hit the iron when it’s hot and keep the suspense in the content just about that much that will hold the reader’s attention but not be so vague as to misdirect him. The right words put across at the right time almost always make the right impact.

Structure of content- An auto-responder is the most cost effective way of potentially engaging with the customer and nurturing him with the future prospect of a conversion. Hence, it is imperative that the brief content is put up in a manner that draws attention at once. Placement of content with the design, deciding on the font size and style and finally making sure that the structure follows a gradual logical pattern are the fundamentals to keep in mind when working on an auto-responder series.

A hint of humor- Though an auto-responder is invariably toned with a sales pitch, it is always good to have it colored with a dash of humor. This is an approach that goes down well with almost everyone, and in a time when unidentified mails hit the trash it is always good to have an edge in terms of what you are offering the reader.

It’s important to acknowledge the fact that what makes one auto-responder different from another though both may be marketing the same product is the CONTENT that goes into it. So keep it short, but hit the target with the content that you script for auto-responders.

Interactivity the Key in Product Reviews

Posted by on Dec 04 2009 | Product Descriptions

Have you ever thought of reviewing a product that you have never used? It was a challenge on the first go but gradually I understood that interactivity was the key for this project. The biggest challenge was reviewing a varied base of products from home appliances to backpacks and even more. In the beginning it was quite difficult for me to understand the exact requirements of the clients but with continuous feedback from my seniors and some discipline I have understood the dos and don’ts of the project.

Writing reviews is a time consuming job because you will have to research for the exact specifications of certain products. I do enjoy researching because sometime the products were so weird that it captured my curiosity. While writing a review one must take care that the specifications are dead right so that audience are not misguided. I believe that a review of a certain product must be informative and it should not look like an advertisement. Writing a product review will definitely test your researching abilities and general know how because sometime you may fail to find any specific information on a particular product.

I have understood that information should be provided in an interesting or interactive way. The text should be framed in the best possible manner so that it puts an impact on the reader. The best way to write a product review is to collect relevant information and then rephrase it in a very interactive and informative way. By writing product reviews I have learnt many new things. I do enjoy writing reviews of a number of home appliances, DIY gadgets, backpacks, etc. But I must admit that reviewing games for the very famous Nintendo DS and PSP is my favourite. It is because gaming is my favourite pastime. That is the reason that I knew some gaming terminologies before hand but now I know quite a few many things about gaming.

Reviewing games without even playing them is not that easy but research is the key to it. Watching videos on you tube and accordingly judging graphics of a game is quite interesting. Completing the set target of a minimum number of product reviews per day and maintaining a new tone in each of them is pretty difficult. The best way that i found to maintain a new tone in every article is to make the article as interactive as possible. This project is a learning process for me and still a long way to go.

Product Promotion-a challenge to fit into the customers’ shoes

Posted by on Dec 03 2009 | Product Descriptions

Any product, be it electronics, retailing, manufacturing or others, has a certain target market. And the role of a copywriter is to promote the product in a way that will help it to fit in customers’ shoes. My first assignment in the company was product promotion which was quite challenging for me. I had to handle various kinds of products and honestly speaking, some of them were quite unfamiliar to me. However, my colleagues helped me a lot to adhere to the tactic of promotional writings and gradually, I found my niche in product promotion. Today, I would like to share my experience of learning the tricks of writing for product promotion.

Know the USP of the Product:

A copywriter handling a project like product promotion must have an idea of the USP of a product. What is the unique part of your product? How is your product different from other products? All these things matter a lot in promotional writings. The first thing I learned was to understand the unique part of a product. For example, you are going to write on iPod accessories, now your first job will be to find out the advantages of these accessories. Why would your reader go for these accessories? First find this thing and then write a promotional piece on iPod accessories.

See the product from a customer’s point of view:

Seeing a product from a customer’s point of view is another challenge of a promotional based write up. In such cases, a copywriter should try to put himself in a customer’s shoe. Think again and again if you were a customer, what would you have checked in the product? Truly, this trick helped me a lot to promote various products in an attractive way. For example, while writing on an electronic product, I used to describe the product in different angles. What are the technical specifications of the product? Is it energy efficient? Does it look stylish? – The answers to all these questions will definitely make a write-up on any electronic product worth reading.

Make your write-up crisp, simple and attractive:

Last but not the least; a product promotional writing should be crisp, simple and attractive. It is true that we hardly get time to read anything minutely for a long period of time. So, it is a better idea to make a product customer-friendly through crisp, simple and attractive write-ups.

    Rendezvous with diseases

Posted by on Dec 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization, Theme based articles, Uncategorized

I write, talk, eat, drink and dream only about diseases, you all must be wondering why? Writing theme based articles on celebrity phobias, drug abuse, bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder and diets is not only informative but extremely interesting. These articles bring into focus the fact that celebrities are also human and they are as much victims of stress as any other.

This is a time engaging project wherein I do a lot of in depth research to get to every nook and corner of the celebrities and their personal lives. It actually caught my interest when I got to know that almost all the famous faces are suffering from some kind of disease and disorder which made me put my heart and soul to this project. I flagged of my writing with various celebrities suffering from drug abuse and I was supposed to write about their struggle with this problem and their stay at rehabilitation centers. A sense of compassion and a need to know more drove the process to improve my writings day by day.

    Research

As part of this piece of writing, research is a pre requisite and this is what I start my article with. Research plays a crucial role in writing about these celebrities because there is a need to come out with every minute detail so as to add excitement and readability in the article. If you are thinking that it’s all about copy and paste, then it’s time to revise your thoughts because the job of a copywriter is not only about this. Getting the desired information from one website is not possible and because of this several websites need to be consulted as a reference to write on celebrities.

    Writing

Writing was a challenge for me. Making use of research and to frame information in your own words while keeping the interest intact is what a job of copywriter is. Initially it took me a lot of time to come out with something great but I am growing with the project. Learning is still on and I try my best not to get too influenced with the information available on the internet and write everything in my words so as to give it my touch which is important for any article. Framing sentences in your style is not easy at all and I saved all my rejected articles and improvised on them and I am still learning

    Adding Quote’s and Sources

While writing on these celebrities with some high profile diseases, I am supposed to add quotes so as to give more credibility to the article and this is also informative for the readers. This also requires exhaustive research to look out for relevant quotes and add it in the article. For every copywriter, it is extremely important to mention the source so as to validate the quote.

After repeated mistakes, I am finding it more challenging and I learnt that it is important to be patient while doing research, you simply can’t give up. Effective and interesting writing, time management, right use of words and not to forget “no plagiarism” is what a good copywriter should adhere to.

Theme based article writing is a domain in its own right in content writing, they demand research, a need to read into the nuances of a subject and finally frame informative content.
