Sports Writing

Posted by Parul on Jul 27 2010 | Theme based articles

Earlier sports journalism used to be looked down upon as not being serious enough. But in recent times as sport grew in wealth, power and influence this particular field of journalism has also grown in importance. This has made the job of a sports writer one of the most lucrative jobs.

A sports writer is a journalist or writer dedicated solely to covering sporting events.  It goes without saying that a sports writer must be a sports enthusiast and should have a thorough knowledge about the rules and regulations of as many sports as possible. But this is not enough to make you prosper as a sports writer.  Some of the pre-requirements of the job are:

Qualifications

To be a sports writer you need to have a degree in journalism or English and you should be proficient in the language you intend to write in. Also knowledge of short-hand writing and transcription is always helpful.

Flair for writing

Earlier sports writing used to be a written commentary of the game. But with television invading our drawing rooms that style has become redundant. Today it is all about presenting the events in as interesting a manner as possible. This includes analysis of the game instead of plain stating of facts. Your match report can also be interspersed with funny anecdotes, personal opinions of former as well as present players. But you cannot leave out relevant details such as who won, which player stood out (in case of a team game), the final score etc. For all these you need to be a good writer more than anything else.

Thirst for knowledge

To be a journalist you need to be an avid reader. This is no different for sports writers. You need to be aware of all sporting events, past and present. You need to brush up your knowledge regarding historical facts as well as famous players. Also works of famous sports writers need to be followed. This calls for reading not just newspapers or journals but literary works by sporting legends.  You need not restrict yourself to sports related subjects only. Knowledge in any form and on any subject comes in handy in any field of journalism. So be prepared to devour anything and everything you can lay your hands on.

If you possess the above mentioned qualities sports journalism is definitely your calling. Start off with writing for a local newspaper covering local sporting events. This would provide you experience and exposure which would help you to move on to bigger things.

For constant improvement in the field of writing, a content writer must test her/ his own writing skills. Posted by Parul on Mar 18 2010 | Copywriting

Web copywriting is one of the most trusted ways to promote any business and has emerged as perhaps the easiest way to bring the business across potential customers. More and more businesses and service providers are opting for web promotions and also invest in website developments.  The reach, the growth rate and the enormous amount of success rate of websites are the key reasons to be credited for this mass movement. However, a good web copywriting service provider will aim at creating maximum impact through content.

1. First and the foremost thing to be kept in mind while developing a web copy is that the content has to be very crisp and engaging. If the content is not interesting, it would    not be able to retain the reader’s interest and it just takes lesser than a second for    the reader to switch on to some other page. This also includes keeping the paragraphs short and simple. Too much of complexity and the reader will click the page away.  One can also make the page interactive by incorporating question-form-headings.

2. One should be crystal clear about the target audience for whom the web copywriting is being done. The kind of approach, the type of tone and the language should therefore be decided as per the prospective audience who will ultimately be reading the web copy. It is also important that a consistent tone be maintained throughout the web copywriting project.

3. These days the consumers are way too educated and more aware than one can expect. Therefore it is in the best interest of the company and any business to keep things honest and not hype it too much. There are certain guidelines which should be followed in web copywriting. For one this should be considered that a person who is opting for web medium to know about certain subject would be a more or less educated being and therefore would sense the truth in no time.

4. Even if there is a need to elaborate on certain subjects, it should be done smartly. More often than not, the longer web copy articles loose their effectiveness. One should always try and break the long paragraphs into smaller ones and should give appropriate headings and sub headings so that the reader does not get bored or too confused.

A good web copywriting service provider knows that the internet is a large ocean where there is no dearth of options. With just a few clicks one can surf through many different options. Therefore, it’s of utmost importance for the web copywriter to do the job of web copywriting smartly.

Things A Good Copy Writer Should Bear In Mind

Posted by Parul on Feb 22 2010 | Copywriting

Copy writing is a job that requires one to play with the words and come out with a fresh copy every time. Yes, the pressure is there on the head all-the-time. But if one knows the art of putting the right word at the right place, work becomes play. There are times when, the work becomes ’routinely’ but rest assured, it never gets monotonous because with each new project one gets a brand new chance to give a display of one’s passion for words.

For somebody whose career has just kicked off as a copy writer, everyday brings along a new challenge. One might find the pressure a little difficult to deal with at first but with time one gets the hang of it. And then you start enjoying work. But there are a few things that a good copy writer must bear in mind to attain perfection and hit the bull’s eye which go as follows:

· Core message of the project should come out alive

This is what forms the basis of copy writing and should be basic approach of a copy writer. The copy should be written in such a way that the prospective audience catches hold of the message easily. For this reason, the copy writer should not deviate from the topic or the theme that he/she is writing about. Variations are good to be incorporated in the text but a lot of it might confuse the audience. Therefore, one should stick to the golden rule of talking more about the message itself rather than telling more about related things.

· Copywriter must use language as per the client’s instructions

This is another arena which might make or break the prospects of success as far as a particular project is concerned. It is good to always know the feedback of the client first hand. A good copy writer should also put in effort and modify the copy until the client is satisfied with it. The fine line between making the copy formal, to-the-point and making it sound boring should be acknowledged. Also it should be paid attention to that the copy does not sound like a lot of effort has been put into it.

· Target audience should be clear in the mind of copy writer while creating the text

Next up, the copy writer should bear in mind the target audience for whom the copy is being written. Accordingly, the content of the copy should be created.

The language plays the most important part of a copy. In the world of copy writing India, only words can turn your readers into customers. Do You Want To Be A Content Writer?

Posted by Parul on Feb 08 2010 | Content Writing, Copywriting

I hereby announce that I LOVE MY JOB! Quite literally, being a Content Writer is one of the best things to have happened to my life. Why? Well, the reasons are many. For one, Content Writing is something that gives me a fair chance to get a sneak-peak into almost all genres of writing that have been invented so far. With every new day at office, I pen down or rather type down a different style of writing which helps me discover a new streak of my personality as a Content Writer.

At first, after getting a hang of a number of writing styles, you see yourself becoming ‘The Jack of All Trades’ which of course signals that you have grown as a Content Writer and infuses you with confidence. After a while, it paves way to the better title ‘Master of All’ (P.S. ‘Master of none’ does not exist in the field of Content Writing because for a Professional Content Writer it is more than necessary to perfect the art of playing with words).

Donning the hat of a successful Content Writer is an odyssey, for:

  1. It gives you a chance to explore a plethora of writing styles, to experiment with a vast universe of words and broadens your knowledge about different fields and subjects that you write about.
  2. That said, it does not mean that you go about aping other’s style of writing because that would earn you a tag of a ‘Wanna be Content Writer’ which comes out alive in the write ups that you type.
  3. The bottom line is- Write what YOU believe in and more importantly know what you are writing.
  4. Another thing that a Content Writer can’t overlook is to know your target audience well and smartly sensing what is it that they wish to know about a particular subject.
  5. Maintaining a particular tone throughout the write up is VERY important. The continuity should not break or that might confuse the audience.
  6. Next in line comes incorporating the quotes in the write up. A good content writer is the one who mingles the information with the quotes in such a way that it looks one. One should just rip off the idea from the Quote and shape it up in a fresh way.
  7. Make sure your sources are reliable or you might end up getting into trouble.

So if you want to try your hand at Content Writing, keeping all these above mentioned tips in mind, gear up for some fun time at work. All the best!

Blogging Is Not Rocket Science

Posted by Parul on Jan 23 2010 | Blogs

Today every second person is engaged in Blog writing. People coming from different backgrounds see Blog writing as the best way to express themselves and to talk about their interests and forte. The outburst of internet accessibility among the urban youth has given way to Blog writing. Be it fashion Blog, Travel Blog, Food Blog or a personal Diary, the important thing is that this new born child of internet is growing bigger and bigger by the day and is being considered one of the most famous and capable ones of all of them. And that’s exactly the reason for which it is being called the most efficient tool for marketing as well. In this virtual war of sorts among various blogs, to secure the top most places on a web engine, there are a few things that should to be given importance. What differentiates a Blog gaining popularity from the one which still remains juvenile in terms of its ratings on the webpage determines how good a blog is.

  1. For somebody who is blogging using a personal PC and simply wants to connect with the people having similar interests, it is Okay to use informal and peppy language but if you are somebody who is engaged in Online Marketing for a client, it is essential to only and only write your article in a Formal language and shape it up in a Matter-of-Fact manner. But remember that you’re writing for living human beings therefore it should have the grip to engage a reader.
  2. It should be pondered over that the writer’s state of mind reflects in the write ups. If suppose the writer is not very sure of the topic or is in a confused state, it will reflect in his works as well. Therefore before sitting and typing the article, it’s better to be sure about the topics and the things it brings along.
  3. This leads to another major consideration- Research. One has to gear up and get ready to do immense research to get the hang of what the subject holds inside it. For filling up the write up with random things makes no sense and might not get the blog good ratings at the end of the day.
  4. It’s been said and done that the secret to make a blog successful lies with keywords. And I will do the honor to bring it to the fore once again because all efforts might bite the dust if appropriate keywords are not used. Also, it should be used in moderation. Overuse of Keywords might also result in Spamming.
